Unique Spanish White Wines, Red Wines and Cava

Catalunya

Catalunya, nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees in northeast Spain, produces a stunning variety of wines, including the signature Cava style of sparkling wine that has put it on the world's wine map.

Vines and grapes in Catalunya go as far back in time as Catalunya's own history and culture. The winds and the soil of that cradle of cultures, the Mediterranean Sea, have together molded grape growing and winemaking in this wine region of Spain.

Grapes and Winemaking

Over 2,000 years of wine growing have endowed Catalunya with a wide range of indigenous or traditional Catalan varieties. However, in recent decades, varieties from other grape growing regions, perfectly acclimatized to Catalunya's soil and micro-climate, have created wines of truly excellent qualities.

Nowadays D.O. Catalunya has 25 authorized grape varieties for winemaking. White grape varieties: Chardonnay, Garnacha blanca, Gewürztraminer, Macabeu, Malvasia, Malvasia de Sitges, els moscatells, Parellada, Pedro Ximénez, Picapoll blanc, Riesling, Sauvignon blanc, and Xarel·lo.

Among red grape varieties: Cabernet franc, Cabernet sauvignon, Garnacha tinta, Garnacha peluda, Garnacha tintorera, Merlot, Monastrell, Pinot noir, Samsó (or Carinyena), Syrah, Trepat, and L’ull de Llebre.

Bohigas Fermi Winery

Can Maciá is the historical name of the estate where Bohigas wine cellar and vineyards are located. Documents going back as far as the year 1300 mention the importance of "Can Macià" as a wine growing estate. With over 600 years of history, Can Macià is, beyond doubt, one of the oldest country estates in Catalonia (Cataluña). It is situated in the River Anoia valley, near the town of Igualada. It lies in Penedés, the largest of the DO zones in Cataluña.

At present Jordi and Josep Casanovas Bohigas maintain the traditions and the standards associated with this cava and this family. They grow the varieties of grape: Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada and Chardonnay. By carrying out the wine making process on their own estate Bohigas can offer you the fine cavas that they are renowned for. Also the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cariñena grow in estates belonging to them.
